How Did Pontikonisi (Mouse Island) Get Its Name? 5 Reasons to Visit Pontikonisi (Mouse Island) in Corfu

Pontikonisi(Mouse Island) – The Origin of Its Name

Pontikonisi, or "Mouse Island," likely got its name from its size and shape when viewed from above. However, even with imagination, the island doesn’t resemble a mouse—it looks more like a raft.

Another theory links the name to Pontian monks who lived in the monastery during the 10th century AD. If this were true, though, the island would have been called "Pontonisi" rather than "Pontikonisi".

Greek mythology offers another explanation. According to Homer’s Odyssey, the Phaeacians helped Odysseus return to Ithaca. As they sailed back, the gods, angry at them, turned their ship to stone just as it entered the harbor. This petrified ship is believed to be Pontikonisi.

In ancient times, the harbor was in Lake Halikiopoulou, where Corfu’s airport stands today.

Alongside Vlacherna, a small islet with a 17th-century church, Pontikonisi forms Corfu’s most iconic view, famous worldwide. Though Vlacherna is smaller, it appears the same size since it’s closer to Kanoni, where most visitors photograph this stunning landscape.
